St Nicks Recyling Team

Recycling

St Nicholas Fields award winning community recycling scheme has for nine years been working in close partnership with the City of York Council to deliver a kerbside service to households in various areas of York. Using an electric vehicle and load bearing tricycles, it is a unique zero carbon scheme.

St Nicks won the national Biffa Climate Conscious Award in 2007 for innovation through its zero emissions recycling scheme. In 2010 our team scooped another national award when Project Coordinator, John Brierley, won top honours as Community Recycling Champion at the 2010 Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Awards for Environmental Excellence, which recognise and reward good practice in sustainable waste and resource management.

Last year the scheme underwent a complicated but successful service area exchange with the council. The team are now delivering a high quality kerbside recycling service to 2,400 properties within the city walls. The team has also delivered a tailored recycling service to a number of York events including the CAMRA beer festival and the Cycling City festival. During 2010 the team collected over 350 tonnes of recyclable materials. The recycling scheme started in early 2001, before the City of York Council was able to provide city-wide collections. It is funded through a service agreement with the City of York Council.
