The Friends of St Nicholas Fields run projects and services which enable people to move towards a sustainable future. Our recycling team runs a zero emissions kerbside service using an electric vehicle and load-bearing tricycles. York Rotters, a partnership project with the City of York Council, will help you start composting your waste with free advice. Green Away Days include team-building activities, lunch and advice on how to "green up". They are fun days out tailored to the needs of your workplace. For schools we offer environmental education sessions across the curriculum. Running Wild is an outdoor club for 8-18 year olds, run by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust at the Environment Centre. A new project for 2010 was a series of free workshops called Creating a Climate for Change aimed at voluntary and community organisations, and social enterprises. Funding for the project was awarded to North Yorkshire County Council by the Yorkshire and Humber Improvement & Efficiency Partnership.

We always welcome help and support for our projects - please let us know if you would like to get involved.

Ecominds logoBearing Fruit - St Nicks Community Orchard project

Bearing Fruit is a new project all about growth. Growth in confidence, teamwork, skills and of course… fruit!

This year and next, our Ecominds grant will enable the establishment of a community orchard. This will be part of a Local Nature Reserve that is being developed on a site which was was once York’s landfill site. It will let volunteers with experience of mental health distress and volunteers from the wider community come together, have fun, learn, laugh, and make the most of being out in and improving a much valued green space.

In time, our project will also provide an abundance of free local fruit, not to mention the benefits of greater biodiversity.

There will be opportunities for project involvement at different levels: from one-off workdays to orchard planning and preparation, project documentation and promotional activity, through involvement in the Core Group. Educational opportunities will be tailor-made to individuals taking part and will include recognition of both horticultural and life skills elements.

Bearing Fruit has been funded by Ecominds, a £7.5million funding scheme run by Mind on behalf of the BIG Lottery Fund. Ecominds involves people with direct experience of mental distress in environmental projects that improve their mental and physical health, and local communities.

Bearing Fruit is a partnership between Friends of St Nicholas Fields and the Community Recovery Team.

Please see our Events page for the orchard work days and join in!
