Volunteer
The power of voluntary action turned St Nicholas Fields from rubbish tip to nature reserve and Environment Centre! What will be next? Whatever it is, you can help.
Volunteering at St Nicholas Fields is a great way to meet new friends, learn new skills, gain experience in a competitive sector, help the environment and most of all have lots of fun! In turn for your time and effort, we can provide lots of tea, coffee and enormous amounts of gratitude. Please take a look at our Volunteering image gallery to see the sort of tasks you might be doing.
There are a variety of volunteer opportunities at St Nicks to suit everyone including:
- Practical conservation tasks
- Taking the role as a park ranger
- Gardening
- Opening and staffing the centre on a Saturday
- Recording wildlife you see around the nature reserve
- Helping the recycling team
- Being a York Rotter
- General maintenance and odd jobs
- Events management, publicity and outreach
- Helping with environmental education
- Helping in the office and around the centre
So whatever time or experience you have why not pop in for a cup of tea and a chat with our Volunteer Co-ordinator to find out more?
Or…
GET ACTIVE, GET ECO-ACTIVE!
We run regular volunteer action days to help us cope with the huge amount of work involved in maintaining and developing the nature reserve. Why not join in? Eco-Active Days take place on the first Saturday of the month and a Wednesday mid-month. You will be part of a supervised group carrying out much needed projects on the site, which could be: tree rescue, balsam bashing, deadhedging, path maintenance and insect homing. This is a chance to meet like-minded people, learn new skills whilst helping the environment, getting fit and having fun outdoors! In return we will provide a free lunch of homemade soup and bread.
Please make sure you wear appropriate clothing and strong shoes or boots. Don’t forget to bring water-proofs. Gloves and any tools required will be provided. If possible, please let us know if you plan to come along on a particular day so that we know how many we're cooking for. See the Events for the nearest dates.
If you would like any more information on volunteering and eco-active days please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator.
